Rhamnose is a sugar extracted from birch trees. It solicits a series of reactions at all skin levels, from the innermost dermis up through the dermo-epidermal junction to the outer layer of the epidermis, and works on a broader range of molecules than Vitamin C. Wrinkles are filled, while skin is firmed and lifted.
Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants in skincare. Essential to the proper functioning of the body, Vitamin C is present in the skin where, by trapping a certain category of free radicals, it fights against damage induced by oxidative stress. It is also an asset for fighting pigment disorders, redensifying the extracellular matrix and fighting inflammation so as to soothe the skin. This multitask active ingredient works quickly to attenuate fine lines, even out complexion and boost brightness.
Naturally present in skin, hyaluronic acid guarantees skin plumpness and hydration. Its greatest contribution? Acting like a sponge to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water while ensuring perfect tolerance, even on sensitive skin. It attracts and holds water in the innermost layers of the skin, creating a plump, cushioned effect, filling in wrinkles on the skin’s surface. It forms an even film on skin surface, protecting it against external aggressors.
Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A, which is also naturally found in skin. It boosts cell regeneration at the lowest level of the epidermis and prevents these new cells from quickly aging as they rise up to the skin’s surface. In other words, retinol dives deep to fill in pronounced wrinkles. Its downfall? Skin becomes more sensitive to the sun, so sun protection (SPF 15 minimum) is a must.
Vitamin E occurs naturally in human skin, but can become depleted due to constant environmental exposure in the absence of sun protection. Vitamin E is an enriched source of free radical fighting antioxidants.
Vichy Mineralizing Thermal Water travels 4000 metres underground through the Volcanic region of Auvergne where it is enriched on its timeless patch with 15 minerals.
Captured at its source, it’s then integrated in Vichy products to rebalance, strengthen and regenerate for stronger, healthier-looking skin.
ASK AN EXPERT
With so many anti-aging products on the market, knowing which to incorporate into your routine can be confusing. Skin care expert and dermatologist Dr. Sonya Abdulla breaks down the science behind the most sought-after anti-aging ingredients.
Always be sure to use a product with SPF in the morning if you use retinol or vitamin C. These ingredients can make your skin more sensitive to the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.
In order to maximize the benefits of Vitamin C, it must be applied directly on to the skin. Ingesting Vitamin C does not yield the same benefits to the skin since the intestine can only allow a certain amount of vitamin C into the body. Application of Vitamin C to the skin requires the control of certain elements, such as the formulation, in order to reap the benefits. Vitamin C is an inherently unstable molecule. It needs to be specially formulated so that it can remain stable in the bottle and release its benefits when applied onto the skin. Look specifically for Vitamin C formulations containing L-ascorbic acid in concentrations of 10% or higher, and make sure to choose a product with an acid pH, to ensure stability over time.
