The different symptoms of menopause on your skin

Menopause is a complex process. It can cause some noticeable changes to your body, skin and hair, that we feel you should be prepared for! For starters, know that decreasing ovarian function causes hormonal imbalance that affects natural biological processes of the skin. Longer cell turnover time, impaired regeneration and hydration, loss of collagen and elastic fibers reorientation lead to frustrating changes in the skin quality. Frustrating but not unfixable!

but the constant is a lack of hydration.

The first symptoms usually connected with changing hormone levels are:

  • Dryness- you can observe that the skin is rough, sometimes itchy and has dull complexion.
  • Thinning- there are more visible wrinkles, especially around eyes and mouth and wounds are healing longer.
  • Sensitization of the skin- your skin is often irritated, red, with burning sensation and you have to be more careful with skin-care decisions.
  • Acne- existing skin problems can worsen or develop de-novo because of lower levels of female hormones.
  • Signs of sun damage like age spots - you will likely see the effects of excess sun exposure without protection during previous years.
  • Sagging skin -- as the collagen diminishes, skin begins to lose firmness.
  • Easy bruising- caused by progressive skin thinning due to the loss of collagen, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and water.
  • More appearing hairs on the face and less hair on the scalp- you can notice unwanted hairs above lips, along jawline and chin whereas on scalp they become thinner, sometimes with frontal hairline regression.
