Read on for our tips and tricks on how to enjoy all the benefits of your favourite beauty products, while avoiding several common errors.
Tip #1: Use less product
You might be surprised to learn that we almost always apply too much product, whether for skin or for hair. As a rough guide, a dime-sized amount of cleanser and moisturizer is enough to cover most of your face, while for serums and eye creams, a pea-sized dollop should do. When using shampoo, a cherry tomato-sized amount is enough for fine-to-medium hair: thicker hair needs about the size of a walnut. For conditioner, use between a dollar and a golfball-sized amount, depending on how thick your hair is. Finally, for suncream, use a shot glass-sized amount for each limb.
Tip #2: Revamp your skincare routine
When it comes to skincare, it’s important to consider the order in which you apply your favourite products, as this can have an impact on how effective your skincare regime is. As a general rule, start with lighter oil products after cleansing and toning, before moving onto thicker, liquid- or water-based products. This allows high-powered products with less density, such as serums and facial oils, to penetrate the skin, with thicker products subsequently providing a barrier to lock in their benefits. Storing your beauty buys correctly is also crucial when it comes to getting the best out of your products - no more lipstick in the fridge! Vichy Scientific Communications Officer Laurie Jacquet recommends keeping makeup in a cool environment away from excessive sunlight to preserve them.
Tip #3: Double up
There’s no need for a bulging makeup bag to cover all your bases. Many products can be combined or used in other ways to suit your skincare needs. In summer, mixing a few drops of foundation with your daily moisturiser provides lighter coverage ideal for warmer months, while lipbalm can double up as a base for the lids or highlighter for the cheeks if you’re looking for that glossy shine, as well as helping to tame stray eyebrow hairs. Multitasking products, such as lip/cheek stain or bronzer/highlighting duos are ideal for saving time in the morning, as well as space in your bathroom cabinet.
