Young children have to learn how to protect themselves from the sun, even if they like playing in the sand. Parents’ supervision is essential in that learning.

Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adults ones. Taking care of it reduces the risk of one day developing skin cancer. Both, a paediatrician and a mom will be giving you some suggestions to make this moment efficient and playful.
Dr Bernadet, pediatrician, advices on how to protect children from the sun.
1st essential rule: “Babies and children under 3 years of age should be kept away from direct sun exposure”. The best way to protect your kids from sun’s harmful rays: keep covering them with a hat and a dry T-shirt, protect their eyes with sunglasses and seek shade under an umbrella during playtime.
2nd rule: “Be sure that your child doesn’t take any sun-sensitising effect medicament, absolutely contraindicated with sun exposure.”
3rd rule: Sunscreen choice! “ For children, look for a sunscreen that offers a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 50, water-resistant, tested on sensitive skin under pediatric control.”
The best sunscreen to protect children
Choose a balanced formula with mineral and organic filters. Mineral filters, like titanium dioxide, act immediately as a barrier and reflect UVB rays. But they are not enough by themselves to screen out UVA rays. Organic filters are able to absorb UVA rays, which are more penetrating.
Advice from a mom to protect your kid from the sun’s rays: to avoid any sunburn on the way to the beach, it’s better to apply the sunscreen before leaving.
What if applying the sun protection cream on your child could become a game?
Armed with your bottle, you are ready, but your child doesn’t agree in exactly the same way. Anne, mom of 3 children, is showing us: “It’s a duty for both, parents and children. They are moving and losing patience, we are tending to do it faster and to forget some areas.”
The key is to “involve the child!” according to Dr Bernadet. The application has to be playful and cooperative: “make up yourself as a Dalmatian and make snails on your skin with the cream.”
You can also recommend him to dose it like a recipe (“Pour a coffee spoon in your hand”) or ask him to show you the areas you forgot (ears for example).
Obviously, you need to reapply every two hours and especially after your child swims.
